Ann E. from South Carolina e-mails to ask about success rates. “In what states do hunters have the highest success rates? My husband says it is the Midwest, but I believe it is the Southeast. Who is right?”
Actually Ann, you are right. Nationwide, in 2011, 48 percent of all hunters took home a deer. The Southeast region was the highest where there was a 58 percent success rate, with 43 percent success in the Northeast and 42 percent in the Midwest.
Individual states show some interesting results. Eighty-three percent of Tennessee hunters got at least one deer, followed by South Carolina (70 percent) and Mississippi (63 percent). In the Northeast, the top states were Virginia (80 percent) and New Jersey (63 percent). The top Midwestern state was Indiana at 56 percent.
One interesting bit of information for your state is that 21 percent got one deer, 16 percent got two deer, and 33 percent got three or more deer, giving you the total of 70 percent. In most states few hunters get more than one deer, so South Carolina is interesting from that perspective.
