When a small bear cub got stuck inside a dumpster in Kings Beach, California, last week, the “first responder” wasn’t an EMT or police officer—it was another bear cub.

Showing quite a bit of problem-solving ingenuity, the cub climbed onto his mom’s back and tried to open the lid. Unfortunately, the dumpster was shut tight, and the little cub didn’t have the strength to get it open.

Thankfully, an onlooker called the authorities, and two deputies soon arrived on scene with some ingenuity of their own.

Not wanting to get too close, the deputies open the lid from a safe distance and simply drop a ladder into the dumpster.

The cub is smart enough to figure out what to do, and gingerly climbs over the edge. After surveying the scene he jumps down and scampers over to his mom and sibling.

On a side note, the bear cub’s distress noise is heart-wrenching to listen to. I couldn’t help but feel bad for the little guy.

Thankfully, his ordeal was short-lived, and he probably won’t make the same mistake again.
