Guide Outdoors Bass Expert Jim Moynagh needed a big second day of fishing to earn a spot in what many consider the championship of bass fishing, the Forrest Wood Cup, where the minimum payout is $10,000, and boy did he get it!
He was at the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) tour stop on the Potomac River in Marbury, Md., June 25-28. Moynagh caught his five-fish limit the first day, June 25, that weighed 11 pounds, 14 ounces. That put him in 43rd place, and he knew he had to have a better day on the second day of competition.
Moynagh called it one of the wildest finishes he has ever encountered that second day.
“With five minutes of fishing left, I was sitting with 11 pounds of limit,” he explained. “I was thinking that would put me really low on the paycheck range – if at all, and that weight was probably good enough to get me to qualify for the Cup, but that was not a given. So with five minutes of fishing left, I picked up a bait I had some success with like nine years ago. I am fishing a grass bed and tied on a surface popper. All of a sudden I catch a 4-pounder. I thought that meant a solid paycheck and I was solid for the Cup. I am really pumped and excited. I make another cast and nothing. Then, on my next cast, I catch a bigger 4-pounder! I looked at my watch and said to my co-angler, ‘man, we got to go!’ I got to the check-in boat with just one minute to spare! It was wild!”
That five-fish limit the second day weighed 15 pounds.
Moynagh finished in 10th place among a field of 142 anglers, which was worth $13,162.
His two-day total of 26 pounds, 14 ounces moved him up all the way to seventh place and meant he qualified for a third day of fishing. Only the top 10 anglers advance after the first two days.
The third day of the tournament, Moynagh came in with five fish weighing 12 pounds 4 ounces, and finished the final day of the tournament June 27 with five fish weighing 10 pounds. His four-day total weight for his 20 fish was 49 pounds, 2 ounces.
“The final days, I just couldn’t get any big bites,” he noted.”And yesterday, I lost some fish that would have upgraded me to 11 or 12 pounds.”
Moynagh now sits in 25th place in the overall Angler of the Year standings. He noted he is looking forward to fishing in the Forrest Wood Cup, the final FLW event of 2015, and that championship is set for Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Ark., August 20-23.
