Can You Name These Battle Rifles

Quiz: Can You Name These Battle Rifles?

How well do YOU know your full-auto, full-power rifles? Take our quiz and find out!

This quiz focuses on fully-automatic rifles that fire full-powered rounds from a box magazine. Some of these rifles have seen battle. Some haven’t. Some were mass-produced. Some were only produced in limited quantities. The only thing they have in common is that they are all fully automatic and chambered in 7.62 NATO or larger.

I buy quite often from SG, website is full of great products at great prices, checkout is a snap, and I’ve saved over 1,000 over the last year alone by being a member of the buyers club.

I recently became a member as well to get a nice discount; and the item has been back ordered with a half dozen various dates. I called their supplier; so I know what is being sent out. As for myself; It may be the last time I buy from these guys again. Who wants to buy military gear when they save such in history; for the rest of your life. But glad you’re happy with them.

I stopped ordering years back, even though I’m a member of the buyers club. After the last thing I tried to order, and was told they wouldn’t send it to residents of my state (even though it was legal), I said that’s it. Never again.

Cute quiz though, needs to be harder.

I had the same issue with cheaper than dirt, but so far at least, SG has been pretty good about shipping to my state. I haven’t tried to order rifle part however, so who knows. But the ammo prices make it worth it most of the time.

I’ve seen tha majority of these weapons in the field at some time or another, and most times, the majority of the Warsaw Pact variants were being fired AT me, so needless to say, I’m intimately familiar with them. Great quiz though!

I’ve seen the majority of these weapons in the field at some point or another. In my line of work, I’ve become “intimately” familiar with the majority of the Warsaw Pact variants, as I’ve had the majority of them fired at me in my travels through Afghanistan. Great quiz though!

That takes me back! My local library had a copy; I think it spent more time at my house than the library.
When I was about 13 my family was browsing through a Junktique shop on the OR coast; I wandered into one of the back rooms, and what did my wondering eyes behold? An Austrian Schwarzlose machine gun, sitting on the floor on either the optional backpack mount (sans bipod), or, I’ve always thought, a handmade pack saddle mount from Yugoslavian Partizan use during WWII. Thanks to my hours with WHB’s bible I knew how to pop open the top cover; yep, all there and apparently fully serviceable. Also thanks to WHB I knew how to field strip it, starting by removing the rear cover, releasing the mainspring…but I also knew that if I did that I’d probably end up on the other side of the room and lucky if not additionally smacked about.
I’ve wondered what would have resulted had I wandered casually back up front and said “how much is that gun thing in the back room? It’d look kinda cool in my room at home…”. I doubt they had any real idea what they had: no labels or other info displayed with it. Might’a been cheap!

I see Colt, or whoever the people are there now since bankruptcy…have again made a series 70 Gold Cup. I owned one some time ago and the new ones do not seem like the originals…there’s just something there not the same = I would guess perhaps it’s the machinery or the folkses now mfg them…

It’s a M14 without a mag inserted. Look closely, you can see the paddle mag release just forward of the trigger guard. The photo is tricky because it also doesn’t show the flash suppressor and bayonet lug which would clearly differentiate it from a Garand.

Well since I couldn’t see the pictures, question 7 on which G3 was out, and I would have guessed anyhow. I had to take my best case guess on 1 or 2, but could usually rule out most of the incorrect choices. The problem question was number 10 where none of the choices met your criteria. I guessed you were looking for the Fedorov as an answer as, they seem to be popular for trivia concerning select fire weapons these days. Sadly, it only fires the 6.5 Arisaka cartridge, although it met all the other requirements. Now if you had just said a full powered rifle cartridge (even if it is at the low end there), or if you had put up an AVT-40 instead of a SVT-40 one of the choices would have been truly correct.

It’s pleasing to see I recall as much as I did, actually did better than expected. While firearms interest me quite a bit, the different lines of automatic rifles are some less than fascinating since I am way past the time I will be actively using them. Hey Brian, not to find fault, but some corrections are necessary.
!st. Your description describes these rifles as full auto. Actually they are select fire with full auto capabilities. Thus being 1 of the requirements for the correct description, of a true assault rifle.
    Also known as battle rifles.
2nd. on # 4 you show a pic of a semi auto, M1A, not a select fire M-14. as the answer choice suggests.
I do hope this was an intentional error to see if any of your readers really know what they are talking about.
Amazingly, showing the right side of the weapon and no one has noticed.
    Thanks, Chuck.

One correction for sure — The M-14 remained in service through the beginning of 1967. I was issued a M-14 in basic in 1966 and again in Fort Campbell, KY in 1967. I carried the M-14 to Vietnam during my first tour and was issued a M-16 somewhere during that year.

Wow , I got all 11 of them right on the battle rifle quiz but I have to admit I did not 100% recognize 5 of them. I really did enjoy that and it was so pleasantly informative. I suppose 30 years of reading shotgun news helped me to recognize the unique styles of each manufacturer and their countries of origin which enabled me to weed out the most likely answers. The g3 on question #7 gave me the biggest challenge since I could not deduct any answers based on manufacturer or country. The “K” caused the Mauser 98k to cross my mind thinking karabiner, but honestly it was more luck than anything on that one. I hope there are more of these in the future.

Acckkk…as Bill the Cat used to say: I missed the Fedarov xxx; heard of it, pic was familiar, but couldn’t remember the connection.
I waffled a bunch on the Turkish one; selected the 417…but just felt it wasn’t right. Obviously closely derived from AR family, but a little too swoopy for HK – and obviously quite different from the 416. Should’a gone with my gut, but I’d never heard of the Turkish rifle (other 2 weren’t contenders).
The AR-10 was a bit tricky; couldn’t remember if the original A4-15 had the round forend, and/or the cocking handle on top in the guard. The giveaway was the width of the magazine vs. the height of the grip; had to be the 7.62.
Not up on my G3 variants – not that much space left on my personal memory platform {<-; In this case the "K" was the giveaway. Thanks for the clue!
I think you'll find that the M-60 was derived from the MG-42, not the FG-42.
The M-14: one look at the business end settled it; didn't even take note of the missing mag (-:
The AK-47/AK-M are 7.62×39, as noted above, and the AK-74 is 5.45×39 – and all have the classic banana magazines. Only one choice left…
Cool quiz! Now I have to see if I can reset and go through a few more times looking at the other choices!
    I like the suggestion for more quizzes like this one, as noted above. I'd add Submachine Guns, early and/or current, Light Machine Guns, Heavy Machine Guns…lots of fun obscure stuff there. Breechloaders prior to the Civil War; Revolvers through 1870; Sidearms of WWI, and WWII – all flavors; oh, the list just goes on… If you do Bolt Action Rifles, as suggested I've got a ringer for you {(-;

Nice. Myself and another Detective were the agency gun gurus. Whenever, someone had a gun they did not know what it was, they would bring it to us. I won some bets that way (no money). Mike knew more about the newer stuff and I knew the older firearms. Yep. The ones I missed reflect this shortcoming. What can I say. I grew up reading Gun Digest!

Not sure about your picture for the M14 as there is no selector switch on the one shown (despite the fact the full auto version proved to be unmanageable).

Awesome quiz! Thought I new at least 8. Guessed on a couple and still missed 4! Two of the ones I missed, I was “certain of” when I picked them. But was quickly put in my place and ate some humble pie! Oh well, looking forward to the next SG Quiz!!
I remember when an AR-18 was being tested. If my memory is correct, the 18 looked more or less like a 15, sans the carry handle, and not in what is considered a “full powered” caliber, IOW’s, the 5.56×45?… with maybe a couple of “up-grades or revisons”? Can’t fully recall. Mainly remember the overall look of the rifle (don’t believe it was a carbine)! But that was a while back and a lot of rounds have flown down range since then 😉
Been a satisfied customer of SG, again, for more years than I care to remember….at least on and off for more than 30 years give or take. Would love to be Blessed enough to continue being a customer for another 30! 90′ something and still putting FMJ’s down range…ok, one can still dream! Love the Customer Service, Sales Reps and most of their products. IOW, I have had to return a few items over the years. However, SG has never done me wrong. Sure there would be a hiccup from time to time, but nothing that was not worked out, leaving me happy with the purchase or attempt to purchase. Still remained friends whatever the outcome.

Not a bad quiz- I only got 7 right (my blind ass thought the M-14 pictured was an SKS), and I normally max these. The Turkish AR & the Fedorov I legitimately didn’t recognise. I thought it was a bit sketchy to use the designation “SG 510” rather than “Stg-57”, but I understand why you did that; I’m sure I am not the only one who bought one of those sweet bayonets from SG several years back… By the way, people regularly still stop me on the street to rave about the Bundesgrenzschutz jackboots (almost every time I wear them), 20+ years after I bought them! I get a lot of compliments for the early ’90s Czech jackboots, too…

Mercy, guess I just don’t know my guns. Missed one #11. I like this place. Bought several guns from them. Saved lots of money. Same a lot with ammo too. Knew the M14 right off. That is what I had in the Army, along with the M60,M30,M50, and the M42 Duster(does anyone know what the M42 Duster was?)

I was really challenged by the difficulty in identifying these automatic weapons. I read a lot of different gun magazine’s ,but seldom see articles on machine guns since they are illegal in most states. I laughed a lot at myself. Great quiz, do it again soon. Thanks, C.R

Better than I expected, for sure. I was in Vietnam as a combat Marine in a grunt outfit 2/3, from 1967-68. After a pretty intense fire fight one day, I picked up an AK-47,from a dead NVA, as did others but as I was a mere Pfc, i was confronted by a rosy cheeked 2nd Lt, who told me he needed to take it back to Bn S2 to “study” it. Those around me chuckled as they said that I’d seen the last of that highly effective weapon. My guess is that that rifle hangs above the former officer’s fireplace and he’s told a hundred guests just what sort of action he’s participated in when he was a second liey with the Marines in Northern I Corps.

Since Gary sold SG it has gone down hill. Rude customer service, back ordered products never being shipped but getting the run around, refusal to price match competition, etc. I quit buying from this company for those reasons. My last purchase was almost 10 years ago. Too bad too because you lost thousands of dollars on my orders.
