Shepherd’s Pie with Elk

Quick and easy to prepare, Shepherd’s Pie has been a staple meal for hard-working, midwest families for many years. This hearty recipe uses elk for the filling, but if you don’t have any elk on hand you can substitute in ground beef, venison or other wild game. Bon appetit!

Elk & Vegetable Filling Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground elk
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 2 garlic gloves, minced
  • 5 carrots, diced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh tyme leaves
  • 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup frozen 1 corn
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomoto paste
  • 1-1/2 cups beef stock

Potato Topping Ingredients

  • 1 pound yukon gold potatoes, diced
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Recipe

  1. Place potatoes into a large bot and bring to a boil and cook until potatoes are tender. Drain potatoes and add whole milk, butter, salt and pepper. Mash until smooth and lumps are gone. Set aside for later use.
  2. Heat a large skillet using medium-high heat. Add the ground elk and cook until browned. Add corn, peas, carrots, onions, and garlic to meat and cook until softened.
  3. Season elk and vegetable mixture with salt, pepper, thyme, and rosemary. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste.
  4. Add flour and cook down for about one minute. Stir in beef stock and lower heat. Cook until mixture has thickened.
  5. Spread elk and vegetable filling in an even layer across a 2-quart baking dish or similar. Top meat mixture with mashed potatoes and add shredded cheese. Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.

    I think the illegally obtained elk is trying to hide behind the tomato paste and beef stock and Rosemary thinks Worcestershire sauce is being sexist the carrots are worried about the Korn being homophobic and the black pepper thinks the white potatoes are racist all that from a shepherd’s pie I hope I did not offend anyone seriously though it looks delicious and they’re all living in that wonderful pan together how come we can’t do that

      As a black kid back from Cleveland in the 60’s I was pretty much raised on venison. My pop would go up to Wyoming every year to hunt for deer and moose. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to accompany him on these trips but I bet it would have been fun. I also imagine that the men he hunted with were white for most part. With that being said, I don’t recall him ever having any negative stories about his companions during those excursions. It taught me from an early age to be tolerant of all people. So Roy Alexander I enjoyed reading your post I am in total agreement with ya buddy! And oh yeah, the recipe does look delicious! I love Shepherd’s Pie♥

    I read the recipe for the “Shepherd’s Pie with Elk” in detail. At the very end it instructs one to “add flour and cook down for about one minute” but in the ingredients it doesn’t say anything about flour. How much do you add? Thank you.
