Who knew moose were underwater predators?
Certainly not this humble writer. But hey —— you learn something every day.
As a matter of fact, as much as half a moose’s diet consists of aquatic plant life. Moose need up to 10,000 calories a day to maintain weight. Most of that comes from terrestrial vegetation—which is rather low in sodium.
Aquatic plant life, while lower in nutritional value, provides most of the sodium moose need to survive.
Another cool fact is that the moose is the only species of deer that is capable of eating underwater. Their noses are equipped with muscles that close the nostrils while underwater.
