A Christmas Pheasant Hunt

Four hens and a pair of roosters exploded out of the plum thicket bordering the weed-filled ditch. Peter’s .410 cracked twice, and both roosters dropped. Minutes later the 6-year-old male Labrador returned with one bird, while his daughter, barely one year of age, proudly returned with her first retrieved pheasant. The scene was about as nice a Christmas gift as the writer had enjoyed for many years.
