Deer are seemingly incapable at keeping themselves out of trouble—especially when it comes to frozen lakes.

I don’t know what series of events led to these deer getting stranded in the middle of an Ontario lake, but they sure were lucky when a good Samaritan on skates stumbled onto the scene.

Ryan Peterson was ice skating on Lake of the Woods over his lunch break when he spotted the trio, and headed back to shore to grab some rope. He got back about an hour later to find the deer in the exact same spot.

You can see the spots on the ice where the deer tried to get up and move. It’s clear that they weren’t going to get far.

Thankfully, the deer don’t have much energy left when Ryan lassoes them.

Eventually, he manages to drag all three back to shore. After prodding them with a stick, he ushers them onto land. Hopefully they learned their lesson.

At any rate, good work, Ryan. Thanks for going through the effort to rescue these unfortunate animals.
