Recently, Urban Ice Anglers treated over 60 kids of military families to a day of ice fishing on Lake Harriet, right here in big-city Minneapolis. The local organization is in its 2nd year, and is “100% reliant upon volunteers, industry and local business sponsors who share [their] vision” of creating free fishing opportunities for urban children who may lack experience or resources. Sportsman’s Guide® was proud to help sponsor the event, donating No. 8 Code Blue In-line Ice Fishing Rod/Reel Combos, Sufix® Ice Magic Line, along with $1,500 in gift cards and more.
The organization’s president Karl Erickson knows what it is like to be apart from family, serving multiple tours in Iraq. So the
day was a chance for military families to reconnect while sharing the experience of ice fishing along with the network of passionate anglers he has connected with…all who volunteer their time and equipment for the cause. Once everyone was checked-in, buckets and rod/reels were given out. Then, kids were partnered with anglers who also had his/her gear. The volunteers showed the kids how to fish and explained how to use their fish-finding electronics. And there was success, as some snagged some perch out of Lake Harriet!
It was really a positive moment for all involved, and participants were grateful for all those who contributed. In fact, Outdoors with Heroes and Wounded Warrior Guide Service also helped out. And while the day’s event was for military families, Urban Anglers creates fishing opportunities for all children in the inner city.
