Part 2: Elevate Your Practice
After all the work and planning, we finally find ourselves facing the “moment-of-truth” on a big buck, yet we often end up going home angry and frustrated.
Herein, often lays one of the most common mistakes committed by bowhunters each year — a lack of practice from elevated positions. We often shoot thousands of shots on level ground, and then take our game to the trees, assuming that everything is in good order – nothing could be further from the truth!
Elevated shots present numerous challenges, and nothing short of experimentation — aka “real life” practice — can school us on these issues. Different body angles are involved in shooting from tree stands, and the trajectory of our arrows is affected by such – especially when shooting at targets that are almost directly under our position. Here, the old adage “practice, practice, practice” couldn’t be more applicable.
The confidence and knowledge gleaned from elevated practice sessions is sure to give you a quick attitude adjustment – one that should result in more bone on the wall, and meat in the freezer. And don’t forget to carry a practice arrow in your quiver so that you can take a practice shot at the end of every hunt – such attention to detail is certain to make you a much more productive bowhunter!
